Some Days Are Tougher Than Others…

I’ve determined that having a glass of wine after a long day and class, and with only 15 minutes to spare until midnight, does not help with inspiration for writing my #NaBloPoMo post tonight.  It will however help me sleep. Which I desperately need.

So I will see you tomorrow.  My post for today has now been made.  By the skin of my teeth.  And maybe a freckle.  As my husband keeps reminding me: “Perfection is the enemy of good enough.”  NaBloPoMo is, after all, all about just doing it.  Making the commitment and doing it every day.  No matter what.  It is not about perfection.  Even though as a writer I’d like to lean that way.

Think NaBloPoMo is easy?  Let’s see you try.  Check it out here.  In the mean time, I’ll be catching some Z’s and dreaming up a better plan to tackle tomorrow with.

I Spy With My Little Eye….

So I’m at the last minute today.  Damn it.  I don’t have business cards for my show this weekend or anything else graphics wise ready to go.  And there was Tae Kwan Do and the book fair and a fundraiser tonight that I skipped out on and…. Yeah, you get it.

I have a lot of ideas queued for NaBloPoMo, but none of them are quick enough to allow me to get right back to designing my tags.  I needed something quick and creative to pass the muster for my post.  Because after all, I’m a bit of a stickler for posting with some sort of purpose in mind.

So it occurred to me to look around my kitchen, err… my office I mean, and post some photos of things in this room that might tell you a little something about me.

Didn't you know that a built in wine rack is perfect for model rockets? Sometimes there's wine too.

Pottery skull my daughter made when she was in 6th grade? Behind that is a pottery slate she made with hieroglyphics.

Vase that belonged to Grandma Leona and a sheet of antique music I collect. Grandma almost sold that vase for $1 at a yard sale. I snatched it before someone else could and told her if she was getting rid of it, then I wanted it. I just love it.

Stuff on my fridge.

Two of my favorite magnets ever.

Can you tell I like magnets?

This sign belonged to my husband's 90 yr. old grandmother. She used to work for an antique store and found this. After she died, it came to me. She had a sense of humor, her.

In the end, it wasn’t exactly all that quick, but it was pretty straight forward. So I’m sticking to the notion that at least it was fun and interesting!

Eye See You! It’s What’s On My Hook Today!

image

Eye See You!

Want to know what I’m up to right now? Well this monster flower is what’s on my hook today.  I’m not sure where he’s going just yet.  I’m crocheting madly trying to get ready for Austin Craft Riot this coming weekend.  Just wish I’d had more time this summer to be better prepared.
(I’m still not moved and right now I don’t want to talk about it.)

Here are some of the bookmarks I made last week as well.  I’ve got spiders and skulls too.  You know me, can’t make exactly the same thing twice.  The clockwork bookmark isn’t done yet.

I still need to find just the right sprocket for it.  Most of the buttons are vintage from Grandma Dot and Grandma Leona’s collections.  A couple from when my teens were babies.

Crochet Bookmarks

Anyway, so it’s past time to work on tags and business cards and such lovely things.  I was going to practice my booth setup this weekend, but it didn’t happen.  Somehow other chores and business won out, along with computer work.  I can multi-task on a computer fairly well.  Like now, I have 20+ windows open on my computer and I’m managing them all.  Yes I am. I’m working on this post, organizing our bills, replying to tweets, writing a newsletter for my group, getting a template ready for tags and emailing folks on my list. No it’s not instantaneous, but it will all happen fairly fluidly as long as I’m not interrupted.

Why doesn’t being a taxi for my kids and the other mundane things in life work like that?  Where’s my driver, secretary and maid?

Want To See My Freebies For Craft Riot?

I’ll be participating in Austin Craft Riot a week from Saturday. It’s a great handmade show full of all sorts of goodness.  Texas crochet peeps @ObeyCrochet and @Love_evol are both going to be dropping by the show.
If you’re in the area, you should too!  Maybe watch my booth long enough to give me a bathroom break?

One of the features of this handmade show is that the first 25 people through the door each day will get a grab bag of free handmade goodies. Yes, that’s right. FREE handmade items.

Admittedly I do have mixed feelings about the words “free” and “handmade” going together in the same sentence, but it does get people in the door and it is fun to win things. Plus there will be raffles for handmade items donated by Austin Craft Riot team members as well, which helps us pay for things we need to continue to put on awesome shows.  Soooo, it’s all for the cause and part of the expense of getting a booth.

Donations for door prizes are always a bit of a quandary for me, since as a crochet artist who likes to use high-end materials, my overhead is already pretty high before even considering a donation. Not to mention I cannot compete in volume of production with someone who strings beads. Last year’s crochet magnets still took a lot of time to make, not to mention materials I don’t normally stock. Which also means time away from making what I can sell.  (And additionally takes time away from other causes near and dear to my heart.)

This year I’m donating a hand carved shawl pin for the raffle cause, thanks to Jimbo’s guidance and encouragement at Crochet @Cama (which I have yet to make).  Below are samples of the handmade freebies I put together for the Austin Craft Riot goodie bags. (Click the picture to get the slide show to play.)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The tags?  They came from Avery’s Design & Print Online.  I had to tweak the layouts, as the template does not allow you to change the size of the tags.  I needed these in a hurry, so I just moved all the text over and trimmed off nearly an inch of red from the tags after printing so they would fit the plastic bags I’m using.  I only needed  15, so I justified speed over cost of ink.  I wouldn’t recommend this for a mass amount of product.  Still, take a look at the Avery tools and it should give you some ideas if you’re getting ready to do shows and are debating on how to tag your goods.

For more help and ideas on doing shows, you might like to read my article About Doing Craft Shows: Observations, Likes and Advantages.”  I still haven’t written part 2 for it, but perhaps I will for NaBloPoMo.

After Crochet Cama – Birthday Retreat!

So as most everyone at the Crochet @ CAMA 2011 Retreat learned, I stayed at Cama a couple extra days after the retreat to celebrate my 40th birthday this year.  As clichéd as it may sound, turning 40 has bugged me a bit, which tends to gripe me more.  I guess somehow I thought I would have figured out more of life by now.  Perhaps conquered some of it.  And aside from needing a break from motherhood and work and rush-rush demands, I knew I needed some time to settle, sit with the water and pull my thoughts together, mourn Grandma Dot.  I wanted to take accounting of my life. I did not want to make this transition thoughtlessly or without meaning and somehow I found Grandma’s recent transition to the after-life to be assisting my own transition into something as well.  Some new thing whose outlines I can’t even quite perceive.

A little wistful perhaps, but I believe in embracing life and celebrating every moment we can.  After all, what is it that we have that we can take with us to the here-after?  No matter what we believe?  I know there are many things I won’t be focused on upon my death-bed.  And I know there are many memories I have not lived yet that I want to.  Deployments, lay-offs, near-death experiences – all lend to my views today.  Forty is a nice round number, somewhere around the average American mid-life, to take accounting of oneself.

I didn’t take photos as religiously as I did for the crochet retreat itself, but I did take some.  I was also given permission to copy some photos others took of me at the retreat.  So I finally have proof that I was there!  😀  Here they are for you now.

I’m Not Just Crafty – I’m Handy!

I dropped off the Earth for a bit there. Sorry. There’s only been a little crochet in my life of late, as most of my every day reality has been about working with the home remodeling.

Want to see what I’ve been up to though?  I’m really excited – things are coming together for the house!

Oh, and there is a new crochet pattern in the works too.  Take a look below!  😀

The New Bath!

Since the last time I posted, we have redone most of the front bath.  So new floor, new sink and of course the new toilet I did a couple of months ago.  Yes ma’am, I installed the toilet.

image

Here’s the old front bath. This room used to be the front porch area until it was built in sometime in the late 50’s, early 60’s. Here we have already pulled up most of the old tile. Notice the position of the toilet, which practically sits on the (left) wall you don’t see. No one with long legs could really sit on it. We changed that.

image

And this is the old antique cast iron sink from the 20’s. It found a new home.

image

Old Elgin tub faucets. These have to go. Still working on this one.

image

Phone photos can be quite handy when you’re measuring and asking for help at Home Depot. Let me tell you!

image

There was some old water damage around the toilet, which we rebuilt and completely fixed.

image

We decided to keep the quaint old light and mirror.  Kind of reminds me of my grandfather. There was a light something like this in his old house when I was little.

image

Here’s the new floor and we’re getting ready to turn the toilet so it’s not awkward like it was.

image

Voila! We haven’t finished painting the trim, but here’s the new look!

New Energy Efficient Windows!

We had those old wood double hung windows in here and even with an extra layer of (old) storm windows over those, it really just wasn’t very energy-efficient. Not to mention we needed to change some of the framing so we can finish painting the trim outside.

Our new windows are so pretty, and we definitely notice a positive difference in the room temperature, in spite of the 107 degree weather outside! Also, the new screens  really don’t hinder the view at all. Can you tell there are screens on these windows?  Oh yes, and there’s my baby grand.

The New Carpet!

We started ripping up the old carpet. It was state of the art once upon a time with its textured look, but not today. We started with replacing the kids room and the hallway carpet, as it was in the greatest need of replacement. The living and bedroom will get done later since I received quotes for $300-$1000+ just to move my antique baby grand piano to another room temporarily and back for the carpeting project. It’s cheaper to move it across town! :\ The carpet company says the type we chose will be available at least through the end of the year, so we’ll plan on replacing the rest when we close and the piano actually moves out for good.

image

That’s the old original wood plank floor underneath.

image

The kids room – only the pad is in here and it already looks so much better!

image

When the guys put the furniture back, I asked them to turn the kids’ bed for me. It looks so much better. Our son asked to just have his mattress on the floor so he wouldn’t have to keep cleaning under his bed while we get the house ready to show. LOL. 🙂  The room has so much more space now. Amazing.

image

We have new cushy carpet! I never understood why people liked vacuuming until I realized it’s because my old textured carpet didn’t really let me see for sure what I have vacuumed. I can’t believe how quick this was to vacuum. I think I must have vacuumed the same spots over and over with the old carpet. :/ Who knew that new carpet might save you time?

Some Scratched Floor Patching!

I’m amazed at the amount of people who have recently come into my house and told me how much they like the distressed floors. 😕 The white washing has worn down.  I’ve even been told not to do anything to it.  However, I decided to see if I could touch it up a bit.  Here are photos of my test patch on one of the most distressed spots, next to the front door.

image

This is the after patching photo of the same spot as the other photo, turned the right way. I just touched up the white washing some since everyone keeps telling me not to do much to the floor. This was my test spot to see how it would look.

image

Somehow my photo was turned during the upload, but these are the hard wood floors in half the house. Lots of distressing in them.

OK – There’s Some New Crochet!

My hands only cooperate some of the time right now.  But I did manage to work on a new pattern, spurred by a request on Ravelry. She’s testing it for me now. It was more writing than anything, but I think this will be a good project to use in the future to teach a more advanced technique.

Unfortunately, though, my hands are too swollen to crochet right now. 😦

image

Last Minute Boot Toppers Pattern, designed for a fellow crocheter’s need request. What do you think?

The New Laundry/Pantry Room!

image

It still needs curtains and a new lighting solution, but my goodness this is a brand new room, looking better than it did when we moved in! Andrea gave me good ideas to continue with too. More photos later as I complete the steps.

My oldest friend Andrea drove down to help me with my laundry/pantry room. We’ve known each other about 33 years. I should have taken a before photo of the room, but didn’t think to. We were so busy and Andrea is really good at keeping us on track. Teaching middle school probably helps!

I also didn’t think to get a photo of us together. 😦 Which is sad, because we haven’t been able to spend time together in a while. And I like memories of things I actively do with others in life. Those kind of photos show the stories better than a posed one at a restaurant or something.

It’s easy to be so overwhelmed in your own home and her help was one of the best gifts anyone ever has given me. She helped me paint, organize and think about things in new ways.

I plan to write more about the organizing experience in detail. I learned a lot from Andrea.  Thanks so much girl!

image

My hair is so full of paint spatters though. My kids say I look really old now. I always talk about earning my grey hairs and I certainly earned these! LOL

So all in all, it’s been a very busy and intense couple of weeks, but very satisfying! It’s like eye candy – so much accomplishment that I can finally really see the difference.

There are always those things in life that you work your butt off doing, but don’t always get to enjoy the evidence of. Like laundry and dishes which are never, ever completely finished. They are always there to be done. Which sometimes lends to the dissatisfying feeling that they are somehow thankless jobs with little proof of value.

Well until no one does them, that is.

But there’s nothing like the tangible ability to sit back, admire something, show it off and be able to say “Hey – I DID THAT!” 😉

Hope your last couple of weeks has been great too!
Check ya later and stay cool my friends!

Vintage Finds Slated For New Life

Some of my latest finds. A couple will take up residence with the costume gallery. The rest will go into my store.  I’ll have fun figuring out how I want to enhance or embellish with crochet.  Though I pick up vintage pieces with all this in mind, I also usually bring everything to shows and will put into my store when I haven’t gotten to them yet.  I can only work so fast with my two hands, so I’ll toss a coin and see what gets attention first.  If it disappears from my listings, it probably means I’m working with it.  Unless it’s show-time.  Everything in my on-line store goes with me to shows.

image

Such fun goodies!

image

The curl is interesting. My daughter has another stamped with the brand name "Monet." This one looks older and has no stamp at all. I think I want to have an expert look at it.

image

The grape pearl cluster is a neat find! Also pictured is a lone earring that lost its partner. It shall become a pendant for one of my crochet chokers.

image

This owl pendant is a good 5 inches long! I'm going to have so much fun with this one.

image

The cross is definitely going into the costume collection at home. Love the faded ribbon and tarnished brass. Haven't decided on the olive suede thong necklace.

image

All my Xmas trees sold last winter, so I was happy to find another. Popular holiday gift. And I love the coin montage.

image

I'm thinking the Texas star is mine. The ring is missing pearls, however, the two left leave it balanced and it still looks cute. That sun pin is heavy-duty and will look great as a center piece on a hat.

Cro-pocalypse: The Rise of Crochet

When the subject of crochet comes up, and I begin to talk, it’s like a door opening to sunshine and happiness. Or sometimes, a door to a fascinating volcanic firestorm.  (Gee, what does that look like anyway?) And people always comment, “Wow, I never realized ____, and you’re so passionate about crochet!”  Usually there’s a new spark in their eyes, a little like the one in mine.

And I know I have accomplished my goal:  Infection.

That’s what I call it.  It’s a term I coined in speech class and later applied to marketing on a shoe-string for charities.  It’s always been my secret weapon, something I’m really good at.  But all contagions have to start somewhere.

Before I can do my thing… I have to care.

How did two people start with $0, no budget and create a charity event that drew thousands of children from 10 cities, live news coverage, local celebrity appearances, and get a community together for the cause?  Even surprised the crud out of me?

Infection.

You take your vision, your passion and believe in it so much, know how to communicate effectively and show everyone, from the inside out, their own reason to be excited too.

Infection can be evil, or it can be good. I propose we have a lot to learn from viruses.  I propose that Joy is just as easy to spread as Hate, but your heart has to be in it if you are to become a Source.

Me?  So far my talent for infection has largely been used to help charities.  And I’m excited if after our conversation someone is more likely to pick up a hook or consider crochet in a new light or be even able to tell the difference between crochet and knit or even weaving.  I’m especially excited when I have demystified something. It’s been a little while since I’ve actively infected someone.

Not to sound too much like Dr. Evil or anything….

I think it’s time to set my sights on new goals and higher aspirations in crochet as an art form.  It is time to infect the internet and the world with global domination of the versatility, practicality and coolness of crochet.  I seek a cro-pocalypse.  A veritable domain of the hook, with zombie-like contagion and cult indoctrination – only without the blood, flesh craving and Kool-aid.

But let’s leave the Borg mentality out of it.  Crochet thrives best on flavors of individuality.  It is after all derived from a single, lone hook.  (Though I’m not against experimenting with two!)

It’s time fellow crocheters. Whatever it is in crochet that you love to do.  Whatever part of the large crochet umbrella you specialize in… fill your soul and infect your world!  😉

Crochet Doodle: What’s On My Hook

Well, on one of my hooks anyway. It’s basically a circle surrounded by funky interconnected loops.

image

These loops are made by leaving the first stitch loop on the hook until the very end before working off

I’m exploring shapes for my pins right now. Hurt my hand last week trying to dismantle a bike gear for DD’s (darling daughter’s) steam punk ideas. So keeping it light. Kind of. I guess it’s a matter of opinion. I just realized this doodle would be considered advanced by international yarn standards.

Maybe I should take notes and write it down.

(Oh, the yarn is a boucle with elastic.)

image

Here you can kind of see the loop as it naturally sticks up. Icecream anyone?

image

Here's the doodle laid out with all the loops turned inside out

image

Here's the same doodle, with every other (inside out) loop alternated to the center

image

Here's the doodle with all loops right side out and "naturally" falling into place. Kind of looks like a carnation now. So much for octopod, but I think I have a new idea now that I can apply elsewhere.

Should I Sell Puppet Craft Kits In My Etsy Store???

Blue Puppet Critter

I need to decide what to do and I would like your help.  It’s about my sock puppet critters.

People liked my puppet critters at shows.  They are cute and entertaining, they use recycled milk jugs for the mouth pieces, they’re good for story time, they make you smile.
What’s not to love?

(If you’d like to learn more about how I came to make these, it involves school plays and a young man suffering from leukemia.  You can read the back story on my Flickr page here.)

However, there are several factors involved.  Which has caused me to hold off making more and putting them in my store.

The puppet critters are really time-consuming to put together, which increases the cost involved.  Plus, ping-pong balls make the eyes work so well, but they are not easy to use or make.  Not to mention they are difficult (and dangerous) to cut for use as puppet eyes.  I need to build a jig just to help prevent injury.  Additionally, they are hard to find without a logo printed on them (I learned the hard way logos don’t come off without melting the ball).  AND, I can’t in good conscience sell these as toys someone might get for a toddler, because although ping-pong balls look really great as puppet eyes, they are not safety eyes.  Not to mention there’s glue involved.  Round ball-shaped safety eyes are not only expensive, but they are heavy, don’t look as good or work as well in this kind of application (on sock puppets).  That kind of safety eye expects you are using the eye in a stuffed animal kind of shape, with plenty of puppet flesh to embed the eyeball into.  Not a sock that needs to float over your hand, devoid of pointy uncomfortable parts inside.  Ping-pong balls are lightweight and look great.

Pink Puppet Critter

Sooooo, with all that rolling around in my head: though people on the one hand really liked them at shows, my thoughts were to sell the puppets in kits that people can put together on their own.  The kit would contain the ready-made yarn sock, ping-pong ball already cut for use, stuffing, mouth form and stencils for the pupils.  This would also allow customer to make the pupils whatever color they want and stare in any direction they want.

Offering kits instead of selling ready-made would save construction time on my end that I’d have to charge for.  It would take care of the any danger involved with making the puppet eyes, for instance, because they’d come to the customer already done.  They would just need to assemble them.  Plus I could label the craft kit for above a certain age group, saving me heartache over whether a customer would buy the puppet for a baby or not.  And it would also give the customer more freedom to customize the puppet as they like and save them some money.  Kits would be easier to ship too.

But would people buy them?  What do you think?  Would a kit to make a puppet critter be worth it to a customer at about $18?  Thanks for helping me out with your thoughts!  The poll will be open until July 31st midnight.  There’s even a place to type your own answer.

Project Mr. Right Now: Vintage Jewelry Renewed in Crochet

I love to take vintage jewelry and give it new life and enthusiasm by combining it with crochet embellishment. Sometimes I do this by recreating them into a new piece of jewelry, like a necklace, but they also make wonder hat pins for my hats.  These are some of the latest vintage finds I’m brainstorming with. Except in the case of broken jewelry (or lone earrings), I prefer to keep the original jewelry piece intact, so no chance of destroying a future collectible. Pictured here: an emerald green rhinestone flower/circle pin, a gold earring turned into a button and an ornate square enamel pin. We’ll see what all I come up with.

I Made A Piano Bench! :)

image

image

I made a piano bench for my baby grand piano today!  If you follow my blog, you know I’m also a pianist who aspires to become a piano technician someday.  I’ve already played around with fixing my antique upright.  But today I made a bench for my antique baby grand which came to me without one.  Making a bench alone doesn’t have a lot to do with piano tech work (ok it can if you are restoring), but I’m excited because it’s been needed, I love my baby and I finally found just the means for what I wanted to do.

Earlier this week I found a bench minus the seat, along with about 6 yards of beautiful turquoise velvet corduroy “braid” fabric at our local thrift store that benefits our food pantry. All those years watching Christopher Lowell’s show when the kids were little paid off! Ages ago he demonstrated how to turn a coffee table into an upholstered ottoman.  Well, someone gave me an old couch cushion this morning and I was in business!  I probably should have stopped and took pictures of each stage, but I was just so excited and into the project, I was pretty consumed once it got started.

Not too shabby! 😀

Mini Bullions with Cobalt Czech Glass Choker

Mini Bullions and Czech Glass Choker. My “sleepless so might as well quietly crochet” idea.  Not exactly a quick project, but fairly simple.  And not bad for a proof of concept piece.

Now that the family is waking up, I guess I can get back to moving furniture before the window guys get here later.

It’s Broken… :(

image

One of my favorite hooks, made by WoodByC. Its handle is made from lapis and petrified burl, complete with a tiny quartz crystal that formed in one of the cracks in the burl. (sigh) Someone sat on it at a show.  And I don’t work with stone and wood fusions. I misplaced one of the pieces for awhile. Hopefully I can get it mailed to her now and see if she can repair it.

Having a blast at the Knitting Nest with the Crochet Liberation Front!

image

Look, it's the blues vs. the reds! LOL! ;D

OK, I tried to squat down a little bit so I didn’t cover up someone’s face, but here we are taking a moment to pose.  You can see Marcy Smith, Linda Perman, Karen Whooley, and Laurie Wheeler all in a row to the middle left.  Many thanks to Stacy (far right next to me) and everyone at the Knitting Nest for hosting a wonderful party and to Stacy for winding off my Malabrigio while we were all visiting!  Thanks so much!  Also thanks to our business coach, Judith Manriquez, for taking photos for everyone (not pictured).

Oh, and Linda told me tonight that she would be back up to Austin for a book signing at the Knitting Nest on May 22nd, so mark you calendars for that!

UPDATE: Flapper Purse in Silk and Rust

image

Well, it’s not quite done, but here’s where it’s at now.  I haven’t lined it with the golden rod yellow satin yet, but this is how it’s shaping up.  I debated on whether to use some beading on it or not, but I think the hybrid claw stitch I used makes a nice texture on its own.  I also have an ornate trim I thought about running around the top, but again, not sure it would really add to it.  What do you think?  Any suggestions?

You can read more about this purse here: https://aberrantcrochet.wordpress.com/2010/12/27/my-next-flapper-purse-in-silk/.

You can read more about my other silk flapper purse in blue and stone here: https://aberrantcrochet.wordpress.com/2010/12/08/beaded-flapper-purse-in-silk/.
